What’s Next for Your Student’s SAT Prep?

Your student has recently taken a Fairfax Collegiate test prep course and come away with new strategies, stronger content knowledge, and a better understanding of the test.

As they continue practicing, some questions may get easier—while others still stand between them and the score they want. Certain grammar questions or difficult reading passages may continue to challenge your student. They know they want to score higher. The harder question is: what should they work on next?

Fairfax Collegiate’s one-on-one SAT Intensive courses are the next step after our in-person SAT and PSAT courses—a structured yet customized plan for improvement where your student needs it most.

SAT Intensive: Reading and Writing is eight one-hour sessions on Google Meet ($800). Students work through every topic in the Reading and Writing section of the SAT while learning how to practice independently and building confidence in their skills.

How Each Session Works

Your student meets one-on-one with their tutor via Google Meet. Each session includes guided practice, content knowledge review, independent drills, and assessment of growth. Throughout the course, students also learn and consistently use test-taking strategies specific to the Reading and Writing section of the SAT.

While all students work through each of the topics below, pacing and difficulty are guided by your student’s particular strengths and weaknesses—based on prior test results.

After each session, students receive practice problem sets to complete outside of class. Those assignments are discussed at the beginning of the next session.

As Fairfax Collegiate’s SAT and Test Prep Director, James Miller works directly with your student throughout the course. He is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology and the University of Virginia, earned a perfect 800 on the Math section of the SAT, and has nearly ten years of experience teaching SAT Prep.

• Before you begin, James meets virtually with you and your student to learn about goals, identify where support is needed most, and develop a plan for your work together.
• During each session, targeted instruction and practice build the skills your student needs most—alongside independent practice for every skill in the course.
• Throughout the course, progress is monitored and the plan adjusts as needs change. Brief check-ins with you and your student along the way—and again after the final session—cover progress and next steps.

Information and Ideas

• Central Ideas and Details: Summarize and paraphrase passages to identify the main idea and locate specific details.
• Command of Evidence: Identify and analyze textual and graphical data that would support a given claim or conclusion.
• Inferences: Use the central idea of a passage to draw an effective conclusion to the passage.

Craft and Structure

• Words in Context: Learn strategies for vocabulary-focused problems on the SAT.
• Text Structure and Purpose: Identify why the author of a passage is writing and how the author uses certain elements to make their point.
• Cross-Text Connections: Analyze two texts simultaneously to answer questions about a relationship between the two.

Expression of Ideas

• Transitions: Consider the best way to link two portions of a passage together using transition words.
• Rhetorical Synthesis: Create effective summaries that achieve specific goals or pertain to a particular audience.

Standard English Conventions

• Boundaries: Understand how to separate independent clauses and join them with dependent clauses.
• Form, Structure, and Sense: Use grammar rules to identify proper verb tenses, fix subject-verb agreement, and repair dangling modifiers.

Our in-person, small-group courses help students build and improve their foundation in each of the skills on the SAT. SAT Intensive: Reading and Writing builds on that preparation with the same topics and skills—but with a customized, individual plan of pacing and difficulty that adapts to your student’s unique needs.

With one-on-one SAT Intensive: Reading and Writing, your student spends more time practicing the skills they find challenging while moving more quickly through areas where they are already confident.

How Much Does It Cost?

Students can take SAT Intensive: Math and/or SAT Intensive: Reading and Writing. Each course is $800 for eight one-hour virtual sessions.
