What’s Next for Your Student’s SAT Prep?

Your student has recently taken a Fairfax Collegiate test prep course and come away with new strategies, stronger content knowledge, and a better understanding of the test.

As they continue practicing, some questions may get easier—while others still stand between them and the score they want. Systems of equations might still cause trouble. Geometry problems may take too long. Your student knows they want to score higher. The harder question is: what should they work on next?

Fairfax Collegiate’s one-on-one SAT Intensive courses are the next step after our in-person SAT and PSAT courses—a structured yet customized plan for improvement where your student needs it most.

SAT Intensive: Math is eight one-hour sessions on Google Meet ($800). Students work through every topic in the Math section of the SAT while learning how to practice independently and building confidence in their skills.

How Each Session Works

Your student meets one-on-one with their tutor via Google Meet. Each session includes guided practice, content knowledge review, independent drills, and assessment of growth. Throughout the course, students also learn and consistently use test-taking strategies specific to the Math section of the SAT.

While all students work through each of the topics below, pacing and difficulty are guided by your student’s particular strengths and weaknesses—based on prior test results.

After each session, students receive practice problem sets to complete outside of class. Those assignments are discussed at the beginning of the next session.

As Fairfax Collegiate’s SAT and Test Prep Director, James Miller works directly with your student throughout the course. He is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology and the University of Virginia, earned a perfect 800 on the Math section of the SAT, and has nearly ten years of experience teaching SAT Prep.

• Before you begin, James meets virtually with you and your student to learn about goals, identify where support is needed most, and develop a plan for your work together.
• During each session, targeted instruction and practice build the skills your student needs most—alongside independent practice for every skill in the course.
• Throughout the course, progress is monitored and the plan adjusts as needs change. Brief check-ins with you and your student along the way—and again after the final session—cover progress and next steps.

Course Topics

Students cover the full SAT Math domain list below. Time spent in each area adapts to where your student needs the most support.

Algebra

• 1-Variable Equations: Solve equations involving one variable and determine whether they have one, zero, or infinitely many solutions.
• 2-Variable Equations: Use the standard form for linear equations to solve and graph, and identify points that would be solutions.
• Linear Functions: Comprehend function notation and use it to solve word problems involving inputs and outputs.
• Systems of Equations: Explore efficient methods of solving systems and determining their number of solutions.
• Linear Inequalities: Transform information from word problems into inequalities that can be solved.

Advanced Math

• Equivalent Expressions: Distribute, combine, and rearrange terms in equations to find equivalent answer choices.
• Nonlinear Functions: Turn the context of word problems into quadratic and exponential functions that can be solved.
• Nonlinear Equations: Solve, graph, and analyze quadratic and exponential equations.

Problem-Solving and Data Analysis

• Rates, Ratios, Proportions, and Units: Explore unit conversions and set up ratios to solve real-world application problems.
• Percentages: Convert percentages and decimals to solve problems involving percent growth and decay.
• Data Analysis: Compute mean, median, and mode; understand box-and-whisker plots; and solve questions about lines of best fit.
• Probability: Solve problems dealing with unconditional and conditional probability.
• Evaluating Claims: Solve theoretical questions about the interpretation of sample data.

Geometry and Trigonometry

• Lines, Angles, and Triangles: Find measurements using properties of angles and triangles.
• Right Triangles and Trigonometry: Solve problems involving right triangles, 45-45-90 and 30-60-90 triangles, and core trigonometric ratios.
• Area and Volume: Use the formulas needed to calculate the area and volume of various shapes.
• Circles: Use the properties of circles to find measurements and answer related questions.

SAT Intensive is more than eight hours of tutoring. Your student gets individual instruction, targeted practice across the full Math section, and a clear plan of action designed around their unique needs.

Instead of wondering what to study next, your student approaches SAT Math knowing where they need to improve, how to work toward that improvement, and what to practice between sessions to keep moving toward their goals.

What About the SAT Prep Class They Already Took?

Our in-person, small-group courses help students build and improve their foundation in each of the skills on the SAT. SAT Intensive: Math builds on that preparation with the same topics and skills—but with a customized, individual plan of pacing and difficulty that adapts to your student’s unique needs.

With one-on-one SAT Intensive: Math, your student spends more time practicing the skills they find challenging while moving more quickly through areas where they are already confident.

How Much Does It Cost?

Students can take SAT Intensive: Math and/or SAT Intensive: Reading and Writing. Each course is $800 for eight one-hour virtual sessions.
